Mangrove-mudflat connectivity shapes benthic communities in a tropical intertidal system

چکیده

Understanding the connectivity among seascape habitats is an important emerging topic in marine ecology and coastal management. Mangroves are known to provide many ecosystem services such as protection carbon cycling, but their functional relationships with adjacent benthic intertidal communities less clear. We examined how spatial adjacency mangroves affects macrobenthic of mudflats a tropical estuarine ecosystem. In Bijagós Archipelago, Guinea-Bissau, macrofauna assemblages were compared sampling locations different connectivities between mangrove stands. explored single index (MCI), combining tidal basin size distance edge, affected composition, this effect sediment properties. addition, we used structural equation modelling (SEM) ordination determine environmental predictors directly indirectly communities. MCI strongly composition species abundance, SEM revealed that contained both direct component indirect through mudflat NDVI (normalized difference vegetation index, indicator for microphytobenthos). Sediment properties (grain size, organic matter) macrobenthos independently from MCI, nevertheless also by MCI. show importance accounting structure basins when investigating mudflats. As key food source endangered fish waders these systems, our findings strong arguments integrative conservation at scale.

Resource Quantity Affects Benthic Microbial Community Structure and Growth Efficiency in a Temperate Intertidal Mudflat

Estuaries cover <1% of marine habitats, but the carbon dioxide (CO(2)) effluxes from these net heterotrophic systems contribute significantly to the global carbon cycle. Anthropogenic eutrophication of estuarine waterways increases the supply of labile substrates to the underlying sediments. How such changes affect the form and functioning of the resident microbial communities remains unclear. ...

Arsenic speciation in polychaetes (Annelida) and sediments from the intertidal mudflat of Sundarban mangrove wetland, India.

This paper documents the concentration of total arsenic and individual arsenic species in four soft-bottom benthic polychaetes (Perenereis cultifera, Ganganereis sootai, Lumbrinereis notocirrata and Dendronereis arborifera) along with host sediments from Sundarban mangrove wetland, India. An additional six sites were considered exclusively for surface sediments for this purpose. Polychaetes wer...

Sponge-mediated nitrification in tropical benthic communities

We examined changes In the levels of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) during incubation experiments with 4 conspicuous sponge species from Caribbean coral reefs, mangroves, or seagrass beds (Chondrilla nucula, ?Pseudaxinella zeai, Oligoceras violacea, Plakortis halichondroides). DIN accumulation in the incubation water was detected for all the species, but no significant DIN concentration cha...

Microbial interactions in marine water amended by eroded benthic biofilm: A case study from an intertidal mudflat

In shallow macrotidal ecosystems with large intertidal mudflats, the sediment-water coupling plays a crucial role in structuring the pelagic microbial food web functioning, since inorganic and organic matter and microbial components (viruses and microbes) of the microphytobenthic biofilm can be suspended toward the water column. Two experimental bioassays were conducted in March and July 2008 t...

Biodiversity of rocky intertidal benthic communities associated with copper mine tailing discharges in northern Chile.

Copper mine tailings have been discharged around the city of Chanaral, in northern Chile, for more than 60 years. This report summarizes a 17-month long monitoring study of species richness and biodiversity at five intertidal sites around the point of the tailing discharge. Total dissolved copper in sites close to the point of discharge varied between 8.72 microg/l and 34.15 microg/l, showing t...
